An 11 year old girl was seriously wounded by a stingray's barb which sliced a deep wound into her arm and leg. The girl went into shock due to loss of blood and was taken to hospital where she recovered.
Sting rays in New Zealand are not toxic, but they can cause wounds. Wounds from stingrays are very rarely life-threatening. However, if the wound is very large, deep, or pierces a vital organ, then this can be serious.
