Recent Alphachloralose Poisoning at Western Springs

Alphachloralose is a poison that is used as a pest control agent. In New Zealand it is used to kill birds to protect crops. It is available as a powder, a paste or mixed with cereals such as wheat, barley or peas. When eaten by birds it acts on the brain to decrease temperature, which can be fatal if left untreated. Although human poisonings with this agent are uncommon they may occur. However birds are more susceptible than humans, they are also much smaller and are likely to eat a larger amount of this type of product.
